In the exhibition Smash hit! I examine issues around footprints, power, materiality and functional aesthetics.
In traditional ceramics the hand imprint and even the fingerprint, imparted by the clay, is very high valued. I have often questioned this, as I worked with machinery, tools and natural processes, to allow the method to leave traces and help in the making of my objects.
In Smash hit!, I use my body in the same way that I usually use different tools. Different objects are shaped with the help of gravity and human refinements. Hitting, grasping, twisting, squeezing.
I have sought a clear method there the approach is visible and reporting.
This has resulted in an exhibition of pressed tables, bowls shaped through my head, stepped plates, squashed candlesticks and a kicked shelf.
