Gustaf Nordenskiöld the Collector
Stene Projects, Stockholm. 15 February to 15 March 2014.
Gustaf Nordenskiöld shows in the exhibition the Collector a collection of virgin archaeological objects with unclear origin. They convey traces of a forgotten civilization with other ideals.
The works reflect an exploration of unfamiliar places and cultures coupled with his background and interpretations of contemporary life. There is a physical presence through method, a primitive and refined power transfer to clay, where traces of the process is important in the finished objects. Through material transformation he changes the objects meaning and function, in an attempt to both alienate and make visible the objects actual use. A transformation of matter, function, meaning and location.
The Collector is a journey of discovery among implements, tusks, shields, chains, bows and bones. Artifacts in stained porcelain, textiles, wood and leather. A collection of trophies as objects of worship and conquest.
